Finca Los Nubarrones (‘storm clouds’ or ‘thunderstorms’) is situated in the municipality of Mozonte, within the Department of Nueva Segovia; close to the country’s border with Honduras to the north. It is located near Mogotón mountain, which is the highest elevation in all of Nicaragua. 14 years ago, Mariano Montealegre bought the land on which the farm now lays. From the start, Mariano & his partner Emir have planted only Java trees.

The Java cultivar is an Ethiopian landrace variety which has the potential to produce superb cup quality, with a floral & fruity profile. It also has low fertiliser requirements, as well as a natural resilience to major crop diseases. This makes it a particularly appealing option for smallholder farmers in Central America to cultivate.
This lot is a classic washed process. The drying is usually started on a shaded patio for 5-6 days, and then under full sun. All patios are covered with netting so that the coffee is not laid directly on the floor. Shade drying is necessary, as the sun is more intense at the lower altitude where the coffees have been transported for processing (less than 900m).
