Mahango is located 1,800 meters above sea level in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains in Western Uganda, on the boarder with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Many farmers here live and grow coffee at even higher altitudes. Agri Evolve established a buying centre here for the local farmers, each of whom typically have 1-2 acres of land, and coffee is their main cash crop.
SL variety coffees are commonly found in both Uganda and neighbouring Kenya. They are renowned for their bright acidity and fruity cup profile. Ripe, red coffee cherries are collected daily during the harvest season and taken to the buying centre. The cherries are then weighed and assessed for quality. Farmers are paid in cash. From here, trucks transport the cherries to Agri’s Coffee Station at Nyabirongo. The cherries are floated and graded before being sun-dried. The cherries are turned several times each day to ensure even drying, whilst allowing them to mature and develop their full, rich flavours. Final processing, cleaning, grading, including colour sorting take place in a modern dry mill built in 2022.
